 2017 City of Bloomington Black Her-Story Month Essay Contest
 

The City of Bloomington Black History Month Planning Committee has announced the winners of their 2017 Black History Month Essay Contest. The essay topic, Illuminating the Gifts of Black Women, could be written about Marian Anderson, Ida B. Wells-Barnett, Mary McLeod Bethune, Misty Copeland, Ava DuVernay, Lorraine Hansberry, Fannie Lou Hamer, Toni Morrison, Michelle Obama, Sojourner Truth, or Serena Williams.
 
For Elementary and Middle School students, their 350-500 word essays had to include the following components:

What are/were the subjects gifts to the United States, and how did she influence or help change our society?

What personal traits and skills of the subject do you admire, and how do these traits inspire your own life and goals? 

 
For High School students, their 500-700 word essays had to include the following components:

What are/were the subjects gifts to America, and how did she influence or help change our society?


What personal traits and skills of the subject do you admire, and how do these traits inspire your own life and goals?
What are some of the ways that "her-story", can motivate others to change? 
 
Elementary School Winners:
1st Prize: Kira Unger-Levinson (University)
2nd Prize: Xavier Laffoon (Highland Park)
3rd Prize: Sophia Watters (Binford)
 
Middle School Winners:
1st Prize: Regan Theile (Jackson Creek)
2nd Prize: Zoe Slatkin (Jackson Creek)
3rd Prize: Tara Ganguly (Tri-North)
 
High School Winners:
1st Prize: Poorabi Nanda (Bloomington High School North)
2nd Prize: Haifa Mohamed (Bloomington High School North)
3rd Prize: Eva Ladd (Bloomington High School North)
 
All of the winners will be recognized together at a ceremony at Fairview Elementary on Tuesday, February 21st at 6 pm. The 1st prize winners will receive a 16GB iPad Air 2, the 2nd prize winners $100, and 3rd prize winners $75. The Black History Month Essay Contest is sponsored by Indiana University Credit Union, Prince Hall Masons Stone City Lodge #54, and Order of the Eastern Star, Southern Star #50.
