EL Identification Process
English Learner Identification Process
The Home Language Survey (HLS) is an important first step in helping schools understand each child’s language background. It ensures that students who may need extra support in learning English are identified early and receive the right services.
When a child enrolls in an Indiana school for the first time, families complete the HLS. The survey asks three simple questions about the languages a child speaks and hears at home. If a language other than English is listed, the school gives the child a short English language proficiency screener called “WIDA Screener.”
For families, this means:
- Your child’s language skills are recognized and valued.
- If your child needs English language support, the school can provide it right away.
- Your child will have access to programs and resources that build both academic success and confidence.
For educators, this means:
- Accurate, consistent identification of English Learners across the state.
- A clear starting point for planning instruction and support.
- Stronger partnerships with families by honoring their home languages and cultures
The HLS benefits everyone by making sure no student’s needs are overlooked and every child has the opportunity to thrive.
