WIDA Screener

The WIDA Screener is an English language test that schools use when a new student enrolls and the Home Language Survey shows a language other than English. The test helps teachers understand a student’s English skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The results determine if a student qualifies for English Learner (EL) services and guide teachers in planning the right support.

  • WIDA Screener for Kindergarten – This is a shorter, pencil-and-paper test for kindergarten students.
  • WIDA Screener Online (grades 1-12) – This is the main version used in most schools. Students take the test on a computer, and it adjusts to their responses to give a clear picture of their language skills.
  • WIDA Screener Paper (grades 1-12) – This version is available when schools cannot use the online test, such as in settings with limited technology. It measures the same skills as the online screener.
  • WIDA Alternate Screener (grades K-12) – This version is designed for students in grades K–12 who have the most significant cognitive disabilities. It provides a fair way to measure their English skills so they can still receive the right level of language support.

Why it matters:
The WIDA Screener is not a test students need to “study for.” Instead, it helps schools ensure that every student receives the language support they need to succeed in class.
