A Message from the Superintendent

 The Monroe County Community School Corporation (MCCSC) Board of School Trustees appointed Dr. Markay L. Winston as the new superintendent of schools on January 7, 2025.

In her message to the community, Dr. Winston shares that MCCSC’s strong foundation is the basis for her strategic priorities going forward.

Superintendent Dr. Markay L. WinstonDr. Winston recently served as Interim Superintendent for the Monroe County Community School Corporation and was just appointed Superintendent in January 2025. Prior to her appointment as Superintendent, Dr. Winston served in the capacity of Deputy and Assistant Superintendent overseeing the Curriculum & Instruction Office since 2017. Dr. Winston knew at a young age that she wanted to be an educator and she began her career as a school psychologist with a particular focus on curriculum and instruction. Dr. Winston has held several administrative positions throughout her career, including, Director of Student Services, Chief Officer for Diverse Learner Supports, Chief Academic Officer, and Assistant Superintendent. The array of her experiences has included leading in rural, suburban and urban communities. 

Dr. Winston’s wide-ranging oversight of key departments and offices has included working with federal and state grant programs; supervising and supporting elementary, middle and high school principals; directing comprehensive academic programs in general education, special education, early childhood education, English learner supports, homeless education, and gifted and talented supports and services.

Dr. Winston has established herself as a keen collaborator and routinely facilitates cross-functional teams in an effort to ensure alignment and cohesiveness. Dr. Winston’s unparalleled commitment to excellence, equity, communication, and opportunity resulted in distinctive shifts in district culture, language, focus and student outcomes in each position she has held.

Entry Plan

Dr. Winston’s appointment is the culmination of her three-phased entry plan into her role, focused on community listening, learning, and examining MCCSC’s organizational health. In the six months she served as interim superintendent, she held nearly 200 listening sessions with individuals and advisory groups of parents, teachers, staff, community members/organizations, business leaders, government officials, and many others.
