Community Questions

The following questions were provided by the Monroe County Education Association (MCEA).

  • The Board of School Trustees passed a resolution in April 2024 that resolved that Childs and Templeton Elementary schools will be merged for the 2025-2026 school year. The Board will be presented with a final version of the plan for merging Childs and Templeton Elementary at the December Board meeting and will decide on the plan and timeline at this meeting.

  • Since July 1, 2024, an Admin. Merger Team, Childs-Templeton Teacher/Staff Advisory Group, and Community Members, Parents, and Guardians have been collaborating to create a plan to be presented to the Board of School Trustees at the December Board meeting. The Childs Templeton Merger Project Charter has a list of expected deliverables that will be included in the plan submitted to the Board in December. Other details would be developed after the plan is adopted.

  • ParentSquare notifications, Childs and Templeton Newsletters, and the MCCSC Website informational pages have been used to notify families in both school communities.  Building principals have also reached out to families to ensure that we have a diverse representation of voices from both school communities. Monthly board updates include listings of community engagement opportunities and is published to the MCCSC website.

  • ParentSquare can be translated into over 100 languages, and this has been the primary tool used to disseminate information to our families.

  • ParentSquare sends text message and email alerts to families.
  • This is out of the scope of the merger project charter and there has been no formal discussion or resolution to move sixth grade to middle school.

  • The resolution to merge Childs and Templeton was made in April, and the Board of School Trustees will receive a final plan proposal in December, 2024.

  • IB programming would continue at Childs and Templeton, and teachers would begin to collaborate regarding units of study in Spring 2025.

  • We will work with our IB Coordinators to ensure that the recertification process continues at both schools. Both schools will not need to recertify until 2028.

  • Class size at Childs and Templeton will be aligned with class size practices throughout MCCSC.

  • Special education and ENL services will follow the students. All students will continue to receive high quality support in accordance with their Individualized Education Program (IEP) and/or Individualized Learning Plan (ILP).

  • There will be efforts to ensure that all staff members have time to plan with their teaching teams. Much of this collaboration can take place through the Professional Learning Community (PLC) process.

  • PreK programming is being considered as part of the merger plan. The goal is to keep the PreK students with the primary grades.

  • Time will be provided for teachers to collaborate and determine next steps with units of study and vertical articulation of units.

  • At the December 2023 regular meeting of the Board a strategy for balancing SES was proposed that included grade configurations at specific schools. However, the Board resolution passed in April 2024 did not determine the configuration or identification of grades at a school. The resolution charged MCCSC administration to propose a strategy for the merger. The creation of the plan is taking place from July 1 until the December Board meeting.

  • This will take place in a similar format that it does each year with input from classroom teachers who have worked with the students.  Many considerations will be made to ensure that classes are balanced with a diverse group of students and learning needs and representative of both schools.

  • No decisions have been made at this time.

  • The Binford-Rogers community in MCCSC has a combined PTO, so this model is currently working well in our school district.  This will be a consideration, and PTO representatives will work with the teachers and building administrators to identify the best configuration to meet the needs of both schools. MCCSC administration has spoken with both PTOs about combining and have already begun engagement opportunities and are discussing combining.

  • The goal of the Childs-Templeton merger is to integrate the two school communities, and so class rosters would reflect a merged school population.
